FAMILIES OF THE SETTLEMENT - CARVOEIROS

This is my family in New Haven on the day of my sister's baptism. My sister was baptised in what is called "the Amistad Church" b/c the church (Congregational) took in the Amistad enslaved after the boat that they ?took? landed.  The family were members of that church for over 130 years - still are.    My dad is not Cape Verdean.  His ancestors were enslaved on his mother's mother's side (owned by the Lieutenant Governor of Confederate Virginia _ Samuel Price - & descended from Scottish/British folks who owned the Hotel in town and who descended from Joan of Kent (whose kids included the crazy king who was the subject of a Shakespeare play - my ancestor would have been a half sibling) & Braveheart's brother John & five Revolutionary War Soldiers & by DNA related to the wife of the eldest disputed son of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings)/ On his father's side "mulatto" men who were carpenters and stone masons and a great-grandmother who had been sold from Palmyra, Virginia in 1858 (along with her two children).  But Dad was a Black man above all (we never talked about our Scottish/British line - as most people don't whose women were "insulted" by these folks and thus bore their children).  He fell in love with a Cape Verdena girl - also pictured.  I am in the photo (the oldest little girl) and my sister (the true CV of the family) is being held.
