Great granddaugher of Manoel Jose Duarte da Conceicao of BOA VISTA & (his second wife) Maria da Cruz Boa Vista & Antonia Anastacia Varella & ______________ Belchior.  Feeding her great-grandson, Troy, on 323 Purchase Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts.  This is my grandmother.

I am an ENCARNACAO but I am not sure how.  My great grandmother, Antonia Rosa, was the daughter of Rosa Maria da Cruz # 2 and, therefore, a da Cruz  & although Antonia was never married she somehobecame Antonia Rosa da Encarnacao -- probably assuming this surname (Encarnacao/Incarnation) based on her religious birth date).  Her children, thus, were named Rosa Antonia da Encarnacao & Maria Antonia da Encarnacao & Josepha Antonia da Encarnacao (all of different fathers).   Of course genealogy being what it is I can only find two or three records on Antonia Rosa da Encarnacao (who SHOULD have been Antonia Rosa da Cruz if the Sao Nicolau naming patterns had persisted).  The records I found were for the births of my gram, Maria & for another younger daughter who was the half sister of my grandmother, namely Josepha.   And where did the name ENCARNACAO come from?  Was it an assumed name b/c she was very religious?  Was it the name of a man the mother could not marry?  Was it the name of the biological father of one of the children?  There seem to be no easily visible ties between the various Encarnacao that I have found in Sao Nicolau and my great grandmother - Antonia Rosa (da Cruz) da Encarnacao.

Maria Antonia Encarnacao (Varela/Almeida) dos Santos Cruz was born in Pico Agudo, Sao Nicolau, on 7/8/1892 d/o Antonia Roza da (Cruz) Encarnacao who was not md to Manuel Joao Almeida/Manoel Roza Varella (of Covoada) but she was not bap until two years later. She had a half sister who was about five years older named Roza Antonia da Cruz Encarnacao  (father unknown) & a half sister Julia who was born in the same year (child of her father) & a younger half sister, Maria (child of her father) & a younger half sister, Josefa (child of her mother's husband, Antonio Manoel Gomes).  She was the wife of (1) John Anthony Santos/ Joao Antonio dos Santos & (2) Francisco Pedro “Pasheek” Cruz . Her mother died when she was abt 5 yrs old (1897/8) & she was taken in by a woman who already had abt 7 daughters (by oral history from her to this compiler).  Her maternal grandmother, Rosa Maria da Cruz #2 was the second daughter of Manoel Jose Duarte da Conceicao with this name (her older sister is designated - by me - as Rosa Maria da Cruz # 1).      *****   

1894 --   daLBaps1892-94 - 77/17 - On 3/18/1894, Maria was bap, b. 7/8/92, from Pico Agudo, d/o Manoel Joao de Almeida (s/o Rosa Antonia Varella) & Antonia Roza da Encarnacao (d/o Rosa Maria da Cruz # 2), both of her parents were “trabahadores naturaes”/agricultural workers,   Her godfather was Jose Joao de Almeida (single & he was her father’s half brother - he would die around the same time as Antonia Rosa da Encarnacao & also at the same time as the father of both Manoel & Jose) & her godmother was Antonia Maria de Brito (single).  Also mentioned is Joao Manoel Ramos (md) & the fact that “no one knows how to write”.  But it does appear that people signed the certificate.   Immigration: 6/22/1921 - Ship = ACCAO - Sao Nicolau to NB, 29y, b. abt 1892, in Sao Nicolau, single, laborer, last permanent residence was Sao Nicolau (Villa Ribeira Brava), nearest relative who she left behind is Rosa Antonia Encarnacao.  Will live in NB. - w/ her cousin Ana Rosa de Brito, 97 So. Second St,.  She had $10 & said that her brother paid her passage (but she did not have any brothers & only had one half sister - perhaps it is her cousin/biologicla half brother -- Manoel Roberto Brito who paid for her passage.  Also, her father had immigrated to New Bedford in 1916 but b/c of family dynamics it is doubtful that he paid for her passage).  Listed as African.  (There are notations above & below her name & it is difficult to discern which goes with her but as of this date I am certain that it is the one above which says “ Mother - Pico - Agudo, St. Nicholas”.  – This would be her adopted mother as her biological mother, Antonia Rosa (da Cruz) da Encarnacao had been dead for many years)   New Bedford Marriages - 7/7/1923, Joao Antonio Santos, 28y, 224 So. Front St., NB, 1st marriage, single, mill op, b. St. Vincent, (s/o Antonio M. (Manoel) Santos & Joana Santos (this is Joana Maria Josefa Santos)) md Maria Antonia Encarnacao Varela, 29y, 131 So. Second St., 1st marriage, single, mill op, b. St. Nicholas, d/o Manoel J. (Joao) Varela & Antonia R. Encarnacao, they were md at 224 So. Front St., Ward 5, NB.  The Officiant was Charles S. Thurber of 15 Johnny Cake Hill St., NB.  Vol. 42, Page 343, No. 750.   (Note regarding the Varela attached to the bride.  The bride’s mother was Encarnacao (changed from the maternal family name da Cruz) & the bride came into the country as Encarnacao.  No doubt the US/Mass officials told her that it was her father’s surname & not her mother’s surname which operated as the bride’s surname in the US.  Her father was surnamed Varella aka Almeida.  But she had a bad relationship with her father.  Compiler, who knew the grandmother/the bride well feels that she gave the official the surname of her father’s mother (or the surname which her father used when he came into the US in 1916) – Varela.  She never used the name Varela again that compiler knows of but this is why it was hard to find the marriage certificate in New Bedford records.  Note that here she is saying that her father is Manoel Joao Varela (he was Manoel Rosa Varella as a child & very young man but changed his name to Manoel Joao Almeida - US immigrations probably forced him to go back to Manoel Rosa Varella).

(2)  Antonia Anastacia Gomes Varella b. probably around _____  - THIS COMPILER IS DESCENDED FROM ANTONIA.     Antonia Anastacia Gomes / Varella  was the wife of _______________   &  the mother of Rosa Antonia Gomes/Varella b. probably around 1856  & Antonio Manoel Belchior (husband of Gertrudes Ignez da Graca).  She had a child with Manoel Belchior Soares.  (There was another Antonia  Varella md to Bartholomeu Jose Soares - make sure it is not the same person - their child was Julia which runs in this line so i am inclined to think that there is a connection somehow).

Both of the sons of Rosa Antonia Varella married women named Julia.  Julia the child of Manoel Joao de Almeida (Manoel Rosa Varella) was born three months prior to Manoel Rosa Varella/MJA’s illegitimate child Maria Antonia Encarnacao (d/o Antonia Rosa da Encarnacao & she was her second child).  So this compiler contends that little Julia was actually a grandchild and they were protecting the unwed 13 year old (or so) Julia Catharina - who later married MRV/MJA).  I believe that her death record bears this out.  

Rosa Antonia Varella finally married _________________ in ___________________ and they had a child _________________________.
