REASONS WHY YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO FIND A DA LAPA OBIT

Finding Obits:

The remarkable work of microfilming Cape Verde Catholic Church records by Family Search has its limitations.   Still, much respect and gratitude.

The Obituaries for Sao Nicolau can be found in two churches, Nossa Senhora do Rosario and Nossa Senhora da Lapa.

The records, ostensibly, cover the years described in the tab.  However, much is missing.  Some is duplicated.
For instance, the 1874/75/76 records might also be found under the 1871 - 1876 tab. The 1882 - 1889 records would, it appears, be duplicated in the 1874 - 1889 tab.  The 1895 records would, you would hope, be duplicated in 1890 - 1901.

Some years are missing completely.  Hereinafter, I will attempt to fully describe which records contain what information - which are duplicated - and which are missing. It will take time.

Although there is a tab for da Lapa Obits 1882 - 1889, the year 1886 is NOT contained in this set of records.

da Lapa Obits 1874 - 1889.  Page 149 indicates that this set of records is for the period 1/6/1888-  12/11/1888.  The records start on page 149 and end on page 161. 
da Lapa Obits 1882-89 p. 34 indicates that this set of records is for the period 2/11/1888 to 12/1889.  So, basically TWO YEARS.  This section begins on p 35 and end on p 55.

da Lapa Obits 1874-89.  Page 162  indicates that this set of records is for the period 1/15/1889 - 12/13/1889.  The records start on page 162 and end on page 172. 
da Lapa Obits 1882-89 p. 34 indicates that this set of records is for the period 2/11/1888 to 12/1889.  So, basically TWO YEARS.  This section begins on p 35 and end on p 55. 
1890 -----
Page One of 144 pages is a cover page for da Lapa Obits 1890-1901 and indicates that the information covers January 15, 1890 to July 15, 1890.  However, it has 19 records and goes through December, 1890.  This is covered in a 9/20/2019 post below. 
Page Two is the beginning of this 1890 section and it begins on 2/1 with Nicolau and it ends at 8/19 with Alberto.

1891 -----
Page Nine is another cover page for da Lapa - Obit - 1890 - 1901 which indicates that the information covers January 31, 1891 to November 10, 1891.  Page Ten is the beginning of this 1891 section and it begins at 10/1 and ends at page 18.

1897 -----
Page 19 of da Lapa - Obits - 1890 - 1901 is a cover page and indicates that the information covers 1/21897 - 12/31/1897.  Page 55 starts a new section which covers 1897.  So ....BEWARE ----- because one complete set of 1897 begins on page 19 and another complete set of 1897 (with different names and dates) begins on page 55.  It ends on page 91.  The only thing that I can imagine was that maybe there was a record at two locations or that one priest was itinerant.  Nevertheless you have to look in BOTH places.  RW of Portugal indicates that TWO sets of books were always maintained. The second book, then, would attempt to be a COPY of the original.  So in this case there should be FOUR books for 1897.  The originals (two) and the copies (two).  RW indicated that, in fact, the copies were almost never true copies of the original.

If you cannot find your ancestor who normally went to Church at da Lapa they may have had their funeral services at do Rosario.  So check there as well.
