I translated these records. -----
There
is always more info in each record but I tried to capture the relevant
info. In many instances I captured most of the information. Still,
there are things I didn't get as I do not speak the language. For
instance, little notes on the side such as "the body was found by his
nephew on a pathway", which RoWad of Portugal helped me with,
thankfully.
If it were my relative I would go back to the
original record to see what settlement they were from, or if they were
married or single, I would look for their age, & maybe even a
signature of a witness, or the name of the priest, or to see how many
children they left behind at the time of their death, or where they were buried. In that way you
might be able to distinguish your person from another person with the same
name.
This
little statue was on the border of the steps leading up to the old
convent house across from Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New
Bedford, Massachusetts.

AS DID HIS BROTHER 13/13 - Joao Domingos Luiz, died at 26y, single, s/o Roza Felippa Araujo; 14/14 - Antonio Gomes Soares died at 58y on 12/7/1872, (widower of Francisca Roza Nicolau); 14/15 - Francisca died at 4y on 12/17/1872, d/o Antonia Maria Catharina Soares, of EdB; 14/16 - Joao Jose da Cruz d 12/22/1872 afogado/drowned, at 45y, of Q, h/o Josefa Maria de Brito, attested to by Joao Mathias Gomes & Estevao Vicente Alves; 15/17 - Antonio Martinho Lopes drowned in the sea on 12/22/1872, single, 26y, attested to by Joao Mathias Gomes & Estevao Vicente Alves; 15/18 - Jose Antonio Soares died on 12/22/1872, (afogado/drowned), he was a "pescadora"/fisherman, 25 years. The fact of his death was
attested to by Joao Mathias Gomes & Estevao Vincente Alves. He had 3
kids but his wife is either not mentioned or is in the part of the
document that is folded over. Silva is done for this year.
