FAMILIES OF THE SETTLEMENT - PICO AGUDO

This is my mom, Juanita Antonia Santos ...... reclining at the pool at the "Silly  Putty Mansion".  See my blog sillyputtyhistory.blogspot.com      My mom's mother's side was from Pico Agudo.  

 PICO AGUDO

              
Apparently Pico Agudo means peak of a mountain.  (Sometimes called Pico Agudo de Fanja) I am told that it is a hike up the mountain from Estancia de Bras.  (an hour & a half hike).  Covoada may be between the two. 
My grandmother Maria Antonia d' Encarnacao (Almeida/Varella) dos Santos Cruz was from there (mostly by virtue of the fact that her grandmother, Rosa Maria da Cruz, who was from Covoada & Boa Vista, married a Brito (Antonio Roberto) who was from Pico Agudo).

Antonia Rosa (da Cruz) d' Encarnacao 

My grandmother is really a da Cruz.  That is if you take into account the normal CV naming patterns.  Her maternal grandmother was Rosa Maria da Cruz (born around 1827 - probably in Boa Vista).  Her mother, then, should have been Antonia Rosa da Cruz.  However, her mother adopted the surname Encarnacao - which may have been her biological father's name (or her first illegitimate child's father's name).  My grandmother kept the name Encarnacao & entered the US as Maria Antonia Encarnacao.  This makes sense b/c the naming pattern is that the child's middle name is usually the parent's first name & the girls take the mother's surname.  But when my grandmother went to get married in New Bedford & gave the name Encarnacao the Clerk must have told her that she could not use her mother's maiden name & instead had to use her father's surname.  Had she done this she would have been Maria Antonia Almeida (as her father was Manoel Rosa Varella who later changed his name to Manoel Joao Almeida).  She had an intense hatred for her father so she told the clerk that her father's surname was VARELLA.  Rosa Maria Varella was, indeed, her paternal grandmother so this was a "white lie" b/c her father had once been a Varella (before he also changed his name to the name of his biological father).  So she was registered as the bride - Maria Antonia Varella.  And, of course,b/c of this sleight of hand it took me years to find her marriage certificate.  I was saved by a Clerk of Court who had the experience & willingness to find the needle in the haystack.

14/23 - On 4/19/1896, Josepha was bap, b. 3/10/1895, of Pico Agudo, illegit d/o Antonio Manoel Gomes (s/o Manoel Joao Gomes & Antonia Isabel de Brito) & Antonia Rosa da Encarnacao (d/o Rosa Maria da Cruz) (this is RMdC # 2), both parents were trabalhadores, gods:  Francisco Manoel Gomes, single & Isabel Antonia de Brito, single, both gods were trabalhadores, & both of Q, mentioned - Joao Baptista Gomes, single & Pedro Manoel Ramos.  (PMR was the brother of the father of the child).  

  There is a You Tube video of this little settlement & the video shows the inhabitants grinding up yams to make flour.  Quite a production.  I watched the video & thought "I bet I am related to every single person there". My great gram Rosa Maria da Cruz lived in the settlement of Covoada but moved to Pico Agudo when she married Antonio Roberto de Brito. My grandmother's sister, Rosa never left the area and, therefore, died there. 

The normal church for this settlement seems to be Nossa Senhora da Lapa but I have found records for my family at Nossa Senhora do Rosario as well.

Thank you Manoel Oliveira for this You Tube video which features a man of your same name & also Orlando Duarte & Manuel da Graca.  Loved hearing the words mandioca & farinha again.  Had no idea about the process of making this food stuff.  I have a new appreciation for yams.  Hope this one shot will not violate any rights of yours.

The family of ANTONIO ROBERTO de BRITO & ROSA MARIA da CRUZ
Rosa Maria da Cruz was the wife of Antonio Roberto de Brito  THIS IS MY FAMILY
(See separate tab for her story "Who was Rosa Maria da Cruz") & she lived between Covoada, where she was raised & Pico Agudo where it appears that her husband's family- the Britos, were from &, therefore, where she lived when she was married.  She appears to have been born in Boa Vista (or at least that is where her parents always lived & where her parents were from). 
da Lapa Obits 1890 - 1901  - 193/34 - On 6/23/1898, Roza Maria da Cruz died at 71y, at 11 p.m at nite, lived in Pico Agudo, (d/o Manoel Duarte Conceicao (of Boa Vista) & Maria da Cruz (of Sao Nicolau) ).  Note that Rosa Maria da Cruz is the great great grandmother of this compiler.

The family of BARBARA MICHAELLA da CONCEICAO  

Barbara Micaella da Conceicao was married to Aniceto Fortes Fereira but before this marriage she had two children, Joao & Francisco, with Manoel Rolao de Brito, a man to whom she was not married.  She was the daughter of Joao Domingos de Brito & Michaella Maria da Conceicao.  She was the mother of Joao & Francisco & Anna & Maria Barbara.  There are at least two Joao Domingos de Brito (see "Beware of ..." below).

Beware of another Joao Domingos de Brito who was married to Rosa Affonso   - da Lapa Obits 1871 - 1876 - 13/10, On 8/16/1872, Rosa Affonso died, widow of Joao Domingos de Brito.                     Beware of another Joao Domingos de Brito:  do Rosario Matrimonios 1905 19/, 1/1/1905, he is mentioned; do Rosario Matrimonios, 19/3, 1905, he is mentioned (both times heretofore he is a witness).   The JDdB married to Roza Affonso died prior to 8/16/1872.  The JDdB married to Michaella (we don't yet know what happened to him.

    This is a CONFUSING family - my family - as there were two sets of women with the same name or sometimes the same name.

Anna Rosa da Cruz -----  daLBaps1882-91 - 41/66 -  (this record  was graciously translated by RoWad on 1/16/2023)  ----- - At 10 a.m. on 2 June 1889, in this parish church of NS da Lapa of Queimadas,  the Vicar of the Parish, Jose Gomes Moreira, baptised a female individual who was named Maria & was born in Pico Agudo of this parish on 15 August 1888 at 3 a.m., first child of this name of Anna Rosa da Cruz, worker from & parishioner & resident in Pico Agudo who by law was present at this Act & recognized the baptised (child) who will have permanent right on all legal cases, of unknown grandfather, --grandmother is Rosa Maria da Cruz, the godfather was Pedro Miguel Morais, single, worker, resident in Covoada & godmother was Maria Rosa da Conceicao, single, worker, resident in Pico Agudo de Fanjam, who I know are themselves and to be known I write this record in dupllicate which after read & found to be correct is not stamped due to poverty & it is signed by me & Jose Bento Gomes, md, worker, resident in Mouro, man of this parish, at the mother's request & also the godfather but not the godmoher as she does not know how.

Duarte 

     The Duarte (descendants of Manoel Duarte da Conceicao & Maria da Cruz Boa Vista) seem to have stayed in Covoada even though the sister, Roza Maria da  Cruz went to Pico Agudo when she married  Antonio Roberto de Brito.  Manoel Duarte Conceicao & his wife who was commonly referred to as Maria da Cruz Boa Vista in Sao Nicolau were the parents of Antonio Manoel Duarte (who was the brother of my great grandmother Roza Maria da Cruz).  These siblings had all manner of different surnames (see the tab "Who was Roza Maria da Cruz?").  So it seems that although Manoel remained in Covoada he chose a godmother (his sister) who was now (in 1874) living in Pico Agudo.   Antonio Manoel married Guiomar Roza da Piedade (d/o Roza da Piedade) and they had a son Julio on 3/10/1874.

     This Duarte was the son of a Lopes & married a da Conceicao.  It is not clear if it is the bride or groom who was from Pico Agudo or if they just lived there at the time the child was born.

Jose Antonio Monteiro  - ***** The next two are siblings ANTONIO & JUSTINO - 348/13 - On 2/23/1890, Antonio was baptized, b. 5/10/1888, (of Ribeira Funda (RF)), s/o Jose Joaquim Soares (s/o Maria Antonia Gomes) & Gertrudes Maria Diniz (d/o Thome Estevao Antonio & Maria Anna Diniz).  The godparents were Jose Antonio Monteiro, md, trabalhador, of Pico Agudo) & Narcisa Maria Gomes, viuva, of RF AND 348/14 - On 2/23/1890, Justino was baptized, b. 12/12/1889, s/o Jose Joaquim Soares (s/o Maria Antonia Gomes) & Gertrudes Maria Diniz (d/o Thome Estevao Antonio & Maria Anna Diniz).  The godparents were Antonio Venancio Soares, md, trabalhador, of RF & Narcisa Maria Gomes, viuva of RF.  ***********

MOTTA    

So far there are two Motta familes in Pico Agudo & we will need to wait for more information to see if they were biologically connected. 

The Motta family of Pico Agudo appears to have included (1) Maria Anna Motta & (2) Jose Manoel Motta.  

 Maria Anna Motta was b. in 1802 & she was married to Nicolau Zienho Santiago (see tab below) & her parents were not surnamed Motta (but rather Mathias Serafim Tantuna & Maria Anna da Silva).  Jose Manoel Motta was the husband of Ignacia Francisca Almeida & they appear to have been born in the late 1830's.  Jose was the son of Manoel da Silva Motta & Domingas da Cardozo Rozario.  Jose & Ignacia were the parents of Jose da Silva Motta who was b. 1849 & Maria Ignacia do Rosario who was b. in 1857 & Joao Baptista Soares who was b, in 1857 (were Maria & Joao twins?).  Ignacia died prior to 5/24/1888.  Jose Manoel Motta died on 6/12/1990. Their son, Joao Baptista died in 1892.
