After a couple of years of reading Cape Verdean Catholic Church Records,
things have become pretty standard. There is always the twin birth, or
the mother who died a few days before her child, or the person who
drowned.
But today I came across a document that had information of a kind that I had never seen before and included the words "Denominado Manuel Alexandre".
So, I quickly dashed off a text to RW of Portugal who, as always,
quickly replied & explained what was going on in the document.
For my part I could tell that the document was in Family Search - Sao Nicolau - Nossa Senhora da Lapa - Baptisms - 1875 - 1895. The record is on what I call page 425 but most would say image 425. It is record # 55 relative to a child named Barbara, who was baptized on 5/26/1888, & b. on 3/20. The child was the daughter of Joao Miguel Soares & Narciza Roza da Graca. But then --- there was this extra language -- "lugar denominado Manuel Alexandre".
RW said that "lugar denominando" means "the place named" & that the
priest wanted to emphasize that (at this point in time) Manuel Alexandre
was not a person who was involved somehow with the baptism but rather the name of a place. She added that Mr. Alexandre may have been the original landowner in that place.
Now --- of course --- I have to find out more information on this gent -
Mr. Alexandre. Even stranger Alexandre seems like it is French. Maybe
not.
At page 450 of the same volume there is an entry for two siblings who lived in the "lugar denominando Joao Calim". 450/95 - On 12/20/?? edit for date, Miguel
was baptized, he was b. on 12/13/1886 and his younger brother Francisco
was baptized on 12/20 and he was b. on 10/13/88, sons of Antonia Anna da Cruz. The children were legitimated by Manuel Miguel d' Andrade.
