Baptised in case of emergency by .....

 

This little statue was on the border of the steps leading up to the old convent house across from Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Occasionally you will see a member of the lay community exercising a ministerial function that seems out of the ordinary (for a lay person) but is necessary.  In most of these a newborn child is dying and so they are baptizing it quickly (without a formal church ceremony).

Pedro Antonio dos Santos  -     I have not yet found a Pedro Antonio dos Santos who is married.  However, note that a man named PAdS was a godfather as early as 1844 which means that he was b  probably around or before 1826.

IT MAY OR MAY NOT BE THE SAME MAN BUT A PEDRO ANTONIO dos SANTOS WAS BAPTIZING INFANTS IN THE  CASE OF AN EMERGENCY AROUND 1866.

doRBaps1897 which are filed in BV da Luz Obits 1899-1900 - 278/95 - On 5/8/1897, Clara was bap in case of emergency by Julio  _______ Antonio da Luz Nereu - either the child or the person who bap the child was from Agua das Patas, b. _______,  the child was the d/o Maria da Piedade Soares, d/o Joao Lourenco Dias & Rosa Anna Soares, gods - Joao Manoel Boaventtura & Clara Anna Gomes, some sort of witness function was performed by Carolino Jose do Livramento & Jose Antonio Vieira.
