African Born / African Surnames in Sao Nicolau (and some other islands)

Note that you may come across the word VULGO.  It is not a surname.  It means "commonly known as", not really the name of the person but how the person is/was known.

(2)  Narcisa Maria da Conceicao was b. abt 1842 in GUINE     *****      doRObits - what volume?  43/17, On 2/11/1891, Narcisa Maria da Conceicao died at 49y, single, b 1842, formerly enslaved by Arsenio Daniel Fermino.  

(3)  Jose da Silva was b. in GUINE      ******    ?Sao Vicente or ? Santo Antao (check)     *****      da LuzObits 1821-76, 37/, On 9/3/1852, Jose da Silva, md, died, s/o Reino Concelho de Guimares (from the Kingdom/Portugal - district of Guimaraes.                                                                              

(4)  Jose Sena, was b. in GUINE in 1821     *****      doRObits1890-93, 41/3, Jose, LIBERTA died on 1/4/1891

(5)  THEODORA was b. in GUINE     ******      do RObits 1890-93  21/36 - Theodora "liberta" (freed enslaved woman) died on 7/13/1890.  She was "natural of Guine, Portugueza"     do Rosario Obits 1883-1890 167/36 - On 7/13/1890, Theodora died at "more or less 99y", "liberta".                                                                                                                                                   

(6)  Anna Maria Santos & her daughter Marianna Pereira Santos     *****      Sao Vicente da Luz Baps 1885-89 - 147/68 - On 4/25/86, Antonio was bap, s/o Marianna Pereira Santos (GUINE PORTUGUEZA) d/o Anna Maria Santos, recognized by Manoel Francisco Medina, single (of Santo Antao)

(9)  Esperanza, serva de Xavier Cratt, of GUINE, - doRBaps1842-52 - 240/-  On 12/2/1849, Francisca was bap, d/o Esperanza, serva de Xavier Cratt, she was of GUINE, Godparents:  Benicio /da Piedade da Silva;

I have only come across two other names in my research or the research of RoWad and these names are Nhango & Dongo.  I am actually descended from Nhango as my second great grandmother was Maria Josefa Nhango of Santo Antao (das Pombas).  

These are DONGO from the research of RoWad:

Santo Antao Obits - Santo Antonio das Pombas - 9/ - On 8/15/1837,  Antonia da Cruz Neves died, w/o Manoel das Neves Dongo. 

Santo Antao Obits das Pombas - image ?? -  In 1851, Andre das Neves Dongo, h/o Domingas de Rosa Maria was reported (by the priest to have died in SV, the priest said he had it on good & trustworthy information).  

Santo Antao Obits das Pombas -  29/, On 9/16/1856, Ana das Neves Dongo died at 50y.  

Santo Antao Obits das Pombas 34/, On 9/18/1856, Maria das Neves Dongo died at 30y, w/o Antonio Goncalves.

Santo Antao Obits das Pombas - 50/ - On 10/20/1856, Lourenca das Neves Dongo was reported to have died on 9/27/1856 

SA - Santo Antonio das Pombas Obits 95/ - On 12/28/1867, Antonio was bap, b. 12/11/1867, s/o Josefa Antonia Dongo (d/o Antonia Dongo).  

Santo Antao Obits das Pombas -  13/ - On 5/1/1890, Rosa Maria Delgado died at 50y, (widow of Andre das Neves Dongo).

These are NHANGO:  This is my second great grandmother. 

Maria Josefa Nhango  -  da Luz - Boa Vista (Batismos 1893 - 1897) (this certificate was graciously translated by RoWad).  THIS IS MY SECOND GREAT GRANDMOTHER. 
Manuel was bap on 1/22/1893 & was b. on 1/26/1892 in Rua de Sagres, Mindelo, 6th child of Antonio Manuel dos Santos (from parish NS do Rosario -Sao Nicolau ) & Joana Maria Josefa (from parish Sao Joao the Baptist, St. Antao).  The paternal grandparent is Maria Isabel Soares of Sao Nicolau, the maternal grandparent is Maria Josefa Nhango (dec’d), gods - Manuel Jose do Nascimento (of Sao Nicolau) & Genoveva Francisca Ramos (of Sao Nicolau).  Marinho Gomes Goncalves signed for the father & Luis Francisco Pereira de Lacerda signed for the mother, w -  Henrique da Cruz Mendes & Antonio Guilherme da Cruz.
