Raymond Almeida - Tchuba Newsletter

This was also a free paper that we would get in New Bedford.  Right after this banner the paper indicates that "tchuba means rain in criulo"  The paper was in dual languages.  I have Volume 2, No 2 dated September 1976.  The editor appears to be Ray Almeida.  To become a friend of Tchuba it gave the address as FRIENDS OF TCHUBA - The American Committee for Cape Verde, Room 41, 14 Beacon Stree, Boston, Massachusetts 02108.

The man pictured in the photo on the front page is JOAQUIM MIUGUEL ALMEIDA of Sao Nicolau or Sao Vicente. This article says that he is from Sao Nicolau but his ancestry page says he is from Sao Vicente.  His death info says St. Michaels.

I don't know who to attribute this gorgeous photo to.  There is no name near the photo.  Forty three years later (after publication) I am not sure to who to ask.   During my research on 8/20/2019 I learned that the editor was Raymond Anthony Almeida and that he died on 1/30/2010.

At any rate, there does not seem to be an article relating to the photo within the newsletter.  There is another photo as well as some information about the CV exhibit at the Smithsonian.  However, I had personally attempted to research Mr. Joaquim Almeida (from Sao Nicolau) and thought that he might somehow be related to my Almeida line.  He is Joaquim "Jac" "Pork Chop" Miguel Almeida, b. 8/7/1898 in CV, s/o Miguel Almeida and Archangela/Ana da Graca "Kunjeen" Soares.  He would have been a contemporary of my grandparents as they were born in 1892 & 1894 and  my gram and Mr. Almeida were well known characters in the South End of New Bedford.  There is a family page for Joaquim M. Almeida on Ancestry.com the DNA info shows that I am a fourth to sixth cousin of the person who maintains the family page.  I remembered a video about this man -- it is a part of the American Treasure Thumbnail Series.  He is shown as a "Folk Artist".  There is a documentary.  See searchlightfilms.org. The 30 minute video was produced and directed by Kathryn Golden and Ashley James.  In the video he indicates that he came into the US on the Ship SENATOR and it shows him building a quite large model of this ship.   He talks about the fact that almost everyone in the islands had someone who was involved in America "Merka" whaling.  On the ancestry page there is another fantastic photo of an older Joaquim who is weathered and beautiful.  He died on 5/3/1998.  His obit appeared in the Standard Times and begins "Joaquim Miguel Almeida died at 99 years on 5/13/1998".
His immigration record indicates that he arried in Providence from  Sao Vicente on 6/21/1821 on the SENATOR and that he was the FIRST COOK,  23y, b. 1898.  On his US SS Claims it says that he was from St. Michaels, CVI, and that his parents were Miguel Almeida and Anna M. Degraca.

Below is another photo from the same issue of TCHUBA with a few familiar faces.
