These fifteen pages for da Lapa Matrimonios 1916 - 1917
do not represent a marriage record but rather the whole file is an
attempt to support (with documents & deposition testimony) the
marriage of Joao de Freitas Almeida & Josefina Maria de
Freitas. There are many documents in this matter b/c of the fact that
Joao & Josefina were uncle & niece so they had to show the
Church a strong reason why they wanted to be / should be married. Page 3
is the Groom & Bride's request to be married. Page 4 is the
registry office's declaration that their request had been on show for 10
days in the case of any objection. Page 5 & 6 are documents where
both the bride & groom are giving their reasons for wanting to be
married. -- that she lives in a small Village (Covoada) where it would
be difficult to find someone of her standing, that she is young &
poor & needs to be looked after, etc. Page 7 is a copy of the
groom's baptism. (N.S. do Rosario - Father/Priest Adriano Reymao de Serpa Pinto officiated at the baptism of JOSE who was b. on 5/2?1873, s/o Antonio Lopes de Almeida & Maria Freitas de Almeida.) Page 8 is a copy of the bride's baptism. (N.S. da Lapa - Father/Priest Joao Domingos de Brito officiated at the baptism of Josephina, of Covoada (either b. or baptized on 3/19/1896, d/o JOSE de Freitas Almeida (s/o Joao Antonio Almeida & Maria de Freitas Almeida) & Maria dos Santos de Lima (d/o Ana Domingas de Jesus), gods - Antonio Miguel da

baptismal certificate of the bride's father, JOSE (showing/evidencing
that he & the groom, JOAO, were brothers). (the certificate of the
bride's father, JOSE, indicates that he was b. 1/7/1879, baptized
4/3/1881, s/o Joao Lopes de Almeida (s/o Antonio Miguel Almeida & Margarida Araujo Neves) & Maria de Freitas Almeida of Covoada, (d/o Francisca Antonia de Lima). Gods for JOSE were Fernando Henriques Moniz &
Julia Narcisa de Carvalho.Pages 10 & 11 & 12 are
depositions of 3 witnesses giving their reasons why the marriage should
be allowed to happen ----- both of her parents had died, she went to
live with her uncle JOAO & people find it scandalous. ... friends
& family are avoiding them & she will not be able to find
someone else to marry her. -------- There were three deposition
witnesses: Antonio Joaquim Felisberto, 35y of Covoada, trabalhador,
Manoel Antonio Lopes, 41, md, trabalhador, of Covoada & Miguel Joao
Almeida, 32, md, trabalhador of Covoada.
The balance of documents are official notes by the registrar & clerks. payment of fiscal stamps
AND A PRONOUNCEMENT THAT THEY WOULD BE ALLOWED TO GET MARRIED.
Caveat: Do not confuse this with a Church proceeding even though it is in a Volume relative to Matrimonios at da Lapa. RoWad says this was a Civil proceeding - which apparently was allowed after

But JOAO had a life before his niece became his wife. He had been married to Maria Antonia da Conceicao & they had a son named Antonio da Conceicao de Almeida who immigrated to Brazil in September of 1960.

Maria de Freitas de Almeida was b. around 1860. Wife of Joao Antonio Lopes de Almeida. Daughter of Francisca Antonia de
Lima. In addition to Jose & Joao (b. 1/7/1879), they were parents

Antonio da Conceicao de Almeida is pictured above on his BRASIL immigration card. The card indicates that he is the son of Joao de Freitas de Almeida & Maria Antonia da Conceicao,
he is a pedreiro, b. in Sao Nicolau 10/6/1915 (so born about two years
before the subject marriage) had lived in Sao Vicente, & on
9/29/1960 he entered Brasil. (His mother must have died between the
time of his birth & the subject request for permission to marriage -
two year period - not sure if deaths go that far in the records).
Jose de Freitas de Almeida is the father of the bride, Josephina & in do RMats 1902-1909 - 19/2 he is listed as a witness for the marriage of Antonio Roza Varella & Julia Maria da Conceicao. (Antonio Roza Varella is my (compiler's) great-grandfather's brother).
Constanca Maria de Freitas is the sister of JOAO & JOSE & she is the d/o Joao Antonio Lopes de Almeida & Maria de Freitas de Almeida & the wife of Luis Joao de Brito (s/o Joao Manoel Cabral & Maria Anna de Brito) as evidenced by doRMats1883 - 89, 19/1 - On 1/12/84, Luis Joao de Brito, no age given (s/o Joao Manoel Cabral & Maria Anna de Brito) md Constanca Maria Freitas (d/o Joao Antonio Lopes de Almeida & Maria de Freitas de Almeida), w - Jose Francisco de Figueredo, md (seems like he lived in the place where the marriage took place b/c it says "aquelle morador nesta" & Jose Manoel Duarte, md, of Covoada. da LBaps 1880
