My Antone Vieira
This
section is about a friend of my gramp & grandma, a very very dear
friend, who we knew all of our lives & who lived on the third floor
of my grandmother's home for many years.
Antone (as we called him) was b 5/5/1889 in Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde
Islands. (I have reason to wonder about this as I have not found his
baptism). He was the son of Manoel S. Vieira & Narciza Maria
Ramos.
(It should be noted here that you would think that I could just go to
that particular date in the Catholic Church records to find his birth.
But I can't. First - there are two churches - do Rosario & da Lapa.
Secondly, there are no birth certificates. The way that you find births
is via the baptismal certificate. I am told by a person from the
islands that there was a proscribed period in which the baptism had to
be completed or the person was fined (had to pay an additional fee). So a certificate should be found
within a year from the date of birth.
Antone was married to Louiza Barros Vieira. It appears
that he was single when he arrived in the US at age 23 on his birthday,
5/5/1912. (It could also be that he assumed this birthdate b/c it was the date of his arrival). He was the
brother of Theophile Manoel Viera (b. d. ) & Jose Manoel
Vieira (b. 8/3/1887, d. 12/1/1967). He entered on the Ship = William A.
Grozier which left Fogo &
arrived in New Bedford. He left behind his father, Manoel S. (not sure
yet what the S is for) & he would join his brother Jose/Joseph Manoel Vieira.
At
the end of his life, Antone
lived at 323 Purchase Street. He is buried at St. John's Cemetery in
New Bedford, Massachusetts along with a number of other people (a huge stone) (Antone M. Viera 1889 -
1985, Luiza B. Vieira 1883 - 1955, Jose M. Vieira 1887 - 1967, Ann
Vieira 1891 - 1964, Manoel 1917 - 1998, & Theophile WHO SPELLED HIS
NAME WITHOUT THE SECOND I. 1916 - 1998).
Antone's Massachusetts Death Certificate
indicates that he had been a speeder tender in a textile mill. And in
fact, my grandfather (John Anthony Santos/ Joao Antonio dos Santos) & Antone often worked
together for a period in Boston.
I
have many memories of Antone but two that stand out are (1) He had a
beautiful, clean & polished vehicle which he never drove. It just
sat in front of the house. Each day he would get all dressed up in beautiful clothing and
he would walk somewhere. (2) Ten years to the date of my gram's death he went
to Church & then to the cemetery & then came home & sat in the
Adirondack chair in the back yard - and died. I think he chose his
time.
